Students need to be oriented to professional nature of the course that they are pursuing. Students need to come out of the high school mould put around them all along to a professional in a college environment. Orientation programs with emphasis on social, ethical, moral and professional behavior among students need to be utilized to bring the needed change in students during their transition from high school to college.
Students, typically, lack in linguistic capabilities in English due to prior background/lack of coaching, especially if they are from a rural or poor schooling background. This has to be remediated through special language classes as applied to professional engineering needs.
Logic and Reason are stepping stones of Engineering and hence, students need to introduce to the basic laws of logical reasoning and its relevance to engineering education that they are going to endure for the next four years of their stay in college.
First year students also begin their transformation from teenage adolescence to adulthood during this time and it is critical for them to be highly motivated to stay ahead of negativity which may push them towards to depression. Obviously, first year at college is confusing times for everybody and apt motivational programs need to be delivered.
By the time, they will be swamped with introductory courses in their respective branches of engineering. This is a busy time for students to understand the basics and foundations of their branch and hence they need to take the first level of their linguistic training to the next level, wherein Communications is the focus rather than knowledge in language proficiency. The key here is to translate linguistic proficiency to communication skills. Appropriate training is required to make that transition. Business English Certification is one example of a natural step to acquiring the communication skills.
Emotional quotient/intelligence is part of the professional development needs of a second year student. Personality development programs need to be delivered to improve the with-stand-ability of students to rigors of professional education and their impending careers in the industry. Industry exposure besides Industrial Visits and In-Plant Training are the need of the hour at this point.
› SKILLS TRAINING
Pre-final year is the year of placement training, where students refine their linguistic/communication skills, acquire aptitude in terms of quantitative and verbal abilities, group discussion, interviewing and resume writing skills.
Intensive training is required for students to understand the tricks in the trade of solving aptitude based questions as posed by recruiting companies, appreciate the nuances of writing an effective resume, deliver the needs of professional decorum through appropriate dress sense, projecting with personalities with assertiveness and convincing their employers of their contribution to the respective organizations.
Several mock tests, group discussion sessions, interviews need to be conducted for students to get familiar with campus interviews. Students also need to be trained in withstanding pressure situations through non-curricular augmentation classes like yoga, meditation, etc.
